Skillnets is an enterprise-led support body whose mission is to enhance the skills of people in employment in Irish industry to support competitiveness and employability. The organisation is led by employer and employee stakeholders – IBEC, CCI, SFA, CIF, ICTU – in partnership with the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment and receives funds from the National Training Fund.

The aim of the network is to identify common training needs, deliver training locally using the highest calibre trainers, dramatically reduce training costs through collaboration and attract grant aid from the National Training Fund through Skillnet Ltd and the Department of Education and Skills. Since 2002, Waterford Chamber Skillnet has trained over 1,700 participants in a range of programmes covering Management Development, Human Resources and Health & Safety. Two years ago in conjunction with W.I.T., Waterford Chamber Skillnet piloted an e-learning module for operators/supervisors in called ‘Manufacturing Systems and Standards’ and as a result received further funding to develop additional modules which will lead to a higher certificate in Business and Manufacturing. Since then, we have developed a second module called ‘Lean Manufacturing’ and a third entitled ‘Health and Safety’. In total there will be twelve modules with a minor award available on completion of four of the twelve modules.
Waterford Chamber Skillnet also set up a ‘South East Lean Forum’, which enables companies to share experiences and explore the potential of lean principles. We have had seven company site visits to date where companies give a short presentation on lean and a site tour.
